It is exciting to realize that God has something new for us EVERY day. Today is not just a warmed-over version of yesterday. God has new plans, new ideas, new directions.

His mercies are new EVERY morning. They are ready for us when we wake up. We don’t have to make do with the mercies from the day before. Some cell phone providers allow users to roll over unused minutes from one month to another. It’s comforting to know that God doesn’t work that way; He doesn’t have “rollover” mercies.

When the Israelites were in the wilderness, God fed them with manna – it fell on the ground every morning. It is important for us to connect with Him every morning; to get in touch with what He has for us that day. There is something about connecting with God early – at the beginning of the day.

The manna had to be gathered early because when the sun got hot, it melted (Exodus 16:21). We need to connect with God early before the activities of the day press upon us. If we wait until the heat of the day, we won’t have ears to hear Him as easily. Our “manna” will have melted in the heat of the day’s activities.

God is a faithful, stable God. He fed the Israelites EVERY morning. He didn’t forget, or oversleep or run short of manna. He was always there for them. But they did have to go out to gather it. He is the same today. He has a plan to provide for each of us, and that plan will never fail. But we also have a responsibility to stay in close relationship to Him; to go to Him each morning for our daily provision. Jesus prayed “Give us this day our daily bread,” (Matthew 6:11). God has something fresh for us each day.

Isn’t it nice to know that God’s compassions never fail? His tender mercies and loving kindness are always directed toward us. No matter what we’re going through, He sees, He knows, He cares.
