I recently saw a television news story about clubs that are being formed just to do one thing: laugh! These laughter clubs can be found all over the globe and they focus on the effects of therapeutic laughter for mental and physical health.

I am always amused when I read of scientific findings that prove what the Bible has always taught. King Solomon wrote, “A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing,” (Proverbs 17:22, Amplified Bible).

It’s in our DNA – we were created to laugh. It is an emotional outlet that each one of us needs. When was the last time that you laughed, really LAUGHED? Didn’t it make you feel good? After a good laugh I always feel refreshed and renewed – as if my soul has been rinsed out with a good dose of joy.

The program I watched profiled laughter clubs from various countries. The groups were often led by a leader, and although I could not understand what he or she was saying, I could understand the joyous outpouring of laughter from the group. Laughter is universal and transcends all language barriers. And it is contagious.

One word that is bandied about frequently these days is “viral.” It has always been associated with disease and infection, but now it is also used in conjunction with other elements of society; like viral videos and viral marketing. So how about some viral laughter? Spread it around!

In these economically challenging times there are many material things that people have had to forego because they simply cannot afford them any more. But when it comes to laughter, the price is right. Can you afford to laugh? Honey, you can’t afford not to laugh.

Laugh long,

laugh hard,

laugh often.
